The Grand Hotel is located in the middle of Soi 14, South Pattaya, (see map) between "Pattaya Shoe's Department Store" and nowadays the socalled "Walking Street", formerly also known as South Pattaya Beach Road. The hotel is right at the beginning of the "Golden Mile" of Pattaya. Although its rooms are quiet, so that you will not being disturbed in your sleep by the noisy bars of "The Strip". Boyztown and Sunee Plaza, where the most of gay establishments are located, are in walking distance. It is a nine storey building overlooking "The Strip" and Pattaya Bay from the upper storeies. The former Wiwan Coffee Shop on the 9th floor was replaced in May 2001 by a restaurant on the groundfloor. There is also a room service available serving breakfast, some snacks and different thai and european foods.

Roomrates starting at Baht 500.- up to Baht 780.- (check current exchange rates) per night and room (depending on time of the year, length of stay and last but not least on your negotiating skills). For a prebooked room, rates at the lower end of the ratescale are offered, just enquire by phone or fax. All major credit cards are accepted, but there is a drawback: they most likely will add a surcharge of at least 3% on credit card payments!

At reception there are safety deposit boxes available free of charge. But if you should loose your key, a fee of Baht 800.- applies. It is strongly recommended that you do not leave any valuables in your room.

Guests come from around the world, many from Europe and the Arab Peninsula.

The hotel is straight but gay friendly. There are always a lot of gay guests. It is no problem taking your friend upstairs to your room.

The reception is occupied 24 hours. Although there apply some restrictions accessing the safety boxes (open from 8 am to 11 pm).

There is also a in-house laundry service available. However there are laundries just round the corner or within walking distance.

The staff in general is very friendly and helpful. At reception they will help you to reconfirm your flights, arrange your transportation to the airport, give you advice on sightseeing trips in and around Pattaya, book your trips and tickets (also Alcazar and Tifany Cabaret Shows) if you wish and much more.

There are also some plans by the management to open the Grand Hotel's own small travel office soon.

All rooms are equipped with two beds (mostly twin, few double), individual controlled aircondition (quiet), minibar, direct dial phone, remote controlled TV (big screen) with programs provided by Sophon Cable TV. Each room has its own private big bathroom (incl. bathtub).

The rooms facing north overlook the Bay of Pattaya. The northern rooms have a smaller and the southern rooms have a bigger balcony. On the bigger ones you even could place two chairs outside, if there were chairs available.

The Grand Hotel Restaurant. In May 2001 the Grand Hotel opened its Restaurant on the groundfloor, level Soi 14. It is also open to the public. They serve Breakfast, Thai and European dishes for lunch and dinner. In general they have a much broader choice available than before in the Wiwan Coffee Shop.
Breakfast comes in the usual setting with American, Continental or Thai Set Breakfast. But there is also a la carte breakfast available. A set breakfast is at Baht 90.- slightly higher priced than at other places but you get your coffee or tea refilled as many times as you like.

Thai dishes are quite excellent cooked and taste great. Only the European dishes are cooked a bit "thaistyle" and therefore are not to the taste of most "Farangs" (as Thais call us Westerners). But the cook surely does his best to satisfy his customers.
Prices are quite reasonable for the standard they offer. Overall the author recommends to give it a try and decide for yourself whether food and service match your expectations.
